Snapchat Memories videos: fixing dates, locations and captions

Exported Snapchat videos usually lose their real capture time in photo apps, and any caption is a separate -overlay.png. MemoriesBack writes the capture time from memories_history.json into the video’s header and adds the location when one exists, without re-encoding the video. Captions are not burned into video files yet.

What gets fixed

Date: the video’s creation time is set from the JSON record when the video can be matched to exactly one record. An existing, different date is never overwritten.
Location: written into the video in the same format iPhone videos use, when Snapchat recorded a real location.
Quality: the video and audio streams are not touched — only the header is edited.

What is not done yet

Captions and stickers on videos are not burned into the file. The -overlay.png is kept next to the video, and the album page included in the result plays the video with the caption on top.
Long snaps that Snapchat split into several clips are not joined.

If burned-in video captions are essential for you, test with the free trial first; your oldest 100 photos are free (videos are not part of the trial).

Checking the result

After importing, open a video’s info panel in your photo app and check the date and place. We have not tested every app and version; anything the tool could not match is listed in manifest.json.

Questions

Does fixing the date reduce video quality?

No. Only the metadata in the file header changes; the video itself is copied as is.
