Snapchat’s official export instructions

A few things worth knowing.

Clear answers before you choose a single file.

Is Snapchat deleting Memories above 5 GB?

Snapchat currently says it will not automatically delete Memories because you do not upgrade. Starting in January 2027, some older Memories outside your oldest 5 GB may be archived. They stay on Snapchat, with access restrictions. You can subscribe or download your Memories to use them elsewhere.

What do I upload?

The ZIP files from Snapchat’s “Download My Data” export with Memories and “Export JSON Files” turned on. Select every part of the export at once. Your files are read inside your browser and are never uploaded to our servers.

What does it fix?

Photos: the caption, sticker and drawing layer is put back on the photo, and the date and location from your export are written into the file so Apple Photos and Google Photos sort and map it correctly. Videos: the date and location are written back without re-encoding. Times are converted to the local time where each memory was taken when it has a location. Identical copies across ZIP parts are merged. Anything we cannot match reliably is left untouched and listed, never guessed.

What is not supported yet?

Caption layers are not burned into video files yet: the layer image is kept next to the video, and the album page shows it on top while playing. Long videos split into parts are not joined. Photos whose layer is a different size than the photo are kept unchanged. Every skipped item is listed in manifest.json with the reason.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Your export is read and repaired inside your browser tab on your own device; the files are not sent to our servers. If you unlock the full export, the payment is handled by Creem and never involves your photos.

How are dates and locations matched?

Only from your export’s memories_history.json, and only when there is exactly one match: by the media ID, or — if IDs are missing — when a single file and a single record of the same type share the same UTC day. Nothing is matched by order or nearest time, and a date or location already inside a file is never overwritten.

Will the dates show correctly in Apple Photos or Google Photos?

The dates and locations are written into the files’ standard metadata, which photo apps read when you import. “Recently added” will still show the import day — browse by capture date instead. We have not tested every photo app and version.

Why are some photos re-encoded?

A photo that needs its caption merged becomes a new JPEG (quality 95). Photos and videos that only needed a date or location are updated without re-encoding. Your original export ZIPs are never modified.

How big an export can it handle?

Files are read one by one rather than all at once, and in desktop Chrome or Edge the result is written straight to disk. Keep enough free disk space for the result. We have not yet verified exports larger than 5 GB.

How is this different from free tools?

Free tools exist, and some say they cover more video features, such as burning captions into videos or joining split clips. MemoriesBack focuses on careful repair with no install and no upload, writes nothing it cannot match uniquely, adds an offline album, and lists every untouched file. Try your oldest 100 photos free and compare.

What does the free trial include?

Your oldest 100 photos, fully repaired, with no signup. Unlocking everything is a one-time $9.99 payment, with no subscription.

What do I get at the end?

One ZIP with your repaired photos and videos sorted by year, an untouched copy of anything we did not change, a manifest of every file, and an index.html album that opens in any browser from the same folder. No account is needed to keep or view it.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes for the free trial and smaller exports: you can save the repaired photos with your phone’s share menu. Large libraries are much faster on a computer, where Chrome or Edge can write the result straight to disk.

Are you affiliated with Snapchat?

No. This is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Snap Inc. It only works on export files you downloaded yourself.
